Introducing My Substack: Writing Alongside Teaching and Learning in Social Work

For many years, Teaching and Learning in Social Work has been a central space for my writing about pedagogy, curriculum, and the practice of social work education. It has allowed me to think publicly about teaching, supervision, and professional learning, and to stay grounded in the values that shape my work.

Why Add a Substack?

Writing has always been how I make sense of my work and how I stay accountable to it. As a social work educator, clinical social worker, coach, and consultant, I spend much of my professional life thinking with others about learning, practice, supervision, ethics, identity, and change. Substack offers a different kind of writing environment: slower, more reflective, and more conversational.

This new space allows me to write in ways that do not always fit neatly into traditional blog posts or academic outlets, while still remaining grounded in scholarship, practice wisdom, and values-informed reflection.

How the Two Spaces Will Work Together

Rather than duplicating content, these two platforms will serve distinct but connected purposes.

Teaching and Learning in Social Work will continue to focus on:

  • Teaching and learning in social work education
  • Pedagogy, curriculum design, and faculty development
  • Resources for social work educators and academic programs

The Substack will focus more explicitly on:

  • Reflective essays on teaching, supervision, and professional life
  • Coaching and supervision as sites of learning and meaning-making
  • Professional identity development across career stages
  • Writing, scholarship, and public-facing academic work
  • Navigating change, uncertainty, and growth in the helping professions

There will be moments of intentional crossover, with posts that speak to both audiences or that extend ideas introduced in one space into deeper reflection in the other. When that happens, I will make those connections explicit.

What to Expect on Substack

Posts on Substack will include a mix of short reflections, longer essays, and occasional practical resources. Some writing will be open to all readers, while some content will be reserved for subscribers who want to engage more deeply with reflective practice, supervision, coaching, and professional development.

The goal is not volume, but intentionality—creating space for thoughtful writing that supports sustainable, ethical, and values-driven professional work.
